| Plant Morphology | Herbaceous climbing vine, usually 1.5-3.5 meters long; rhizomes and fibrous roots on their nodes are red; several to multiple stems, growing from the nodes of rhizomes, slender, quadrangular, with 4 ridges, bearing recurved prickles on ridges, much branched above the middle. Leaves usually in whorls of 4, papery, lanceolate or oblong-lanceolate, 0.7-3.5 cm long, apex acuminate (sometimes obtuse), base cordate, margin with dentate prickles, both surfaces rough, with minute prickles on veins; 3 basal veins (rarely with a pair of very small basal veins on the outside). Petioles usually 1-2.5 cm long, with recurved prickles. Cymes axillary and terminal, much-branched, with more than 10 to dozens of flowers; inflorescences and branches are slender and thin, with minute prickles; corolla pale yellow (light brown when dried), corolla limb diameter about 3-3.5 mm when in full bloom, corolla lobes subovate, slightly spreading, about 1.5 mm long, glabrous outside. Fruits spherical, usually 4-5 mm in diameter, orange-yellow when mature. Flowering period: August-September; Fruiting period: October-November. |
