Plant Characteristics Rhizome cylindrical, 2–4 cm long, 0.7–1.5 cm diameter; surface brownish-yellow or earthy yellow; upper part with residual leaf bases and hairy scales; numerous fine roots around. Roots slender, slightly curved, 10–20 cm long, 1–4 mm diameter; surface yellowish-white or grayish-brown, dense transverse wrinkles, more longitudinal wrinkles at lower end; brittle; cross-section off-white with pale yellow central vascular cylinder, easily separated from cortex. Odor slight, taste extremely bitter.
Storage Conditions Seal, protect from light and high temperature; store in a dry, cool, well-ventilated place.
